With an emphasis on mental health, this article examines the components of forgiveness in Islam and in the views of some Western thinkers, highlighting the necessity of studying the relationship between forgiveness and mental health. The research employs a descriptive–analytical method and relies on library-based sources. From both rational and religious perspectives, forgiveness is a valued, normative, and commendable behavioral virtue that can positively affect the forgiving individual as well as others involved. Through forgiving others’ mistakes, individuals can manage their emotional impulses. Overlooking others’ faults and practicing forgiveness encourage self-reform and moral development, reduce cycles of violence and resentment, stabilize relationships, and strengthen social bonds and friendships. Other functions of forgiveness include attracting people’s affection and enhancing social cohesion and unity. Mental health is not limited to physical well-being; rather, it also encompasses harmony among values, interests, and attitudes in practical life, as well as realistic life planning-dimensions that are fostered through forgiveness. Forgiveness is thus an essential requirement for social life and mental health.
