Patriotism has long been recognized among various nations and has even influenced certain sources of conflict such as ethnic differences. However, it could have immoral requisites due to concerns about its moral legitimacy, as well as the presence of both extreme and reductionist approaches to the concept, ambiguity of its ethical dimensions, its association with concepts such as nationalism, ethnicism. Using a descriptive–analytical method, this study examines rational arguments both supporting and opposing patriotism from the perspective of applied ethics. First, the rational arguments against patriotism include its characterization as an instinctive sentiment, as well as the prioritization of universal human identity, civilizational identity, and cosmopolitanism. Second, the rational arguments in favor of patriotism include its role in enhancing social capital, promoting individual and social stability, strengthening national cohesion, reinforcing national sovereignty and authority, and fostering moderation within individuals and society. Third, acceptance of the rational arguments supporting patriotism can help resolve existing challenges and contribute to addressing issues such as brain drain and the migration of professors and students, whereas rejecting these arguments may expose societies to various social and cultural challenges.
