The central issue of this study concerns the influence of moral knowledge in the process of interpretation, referred to as the interpretive function, whereby moral knowledge serves as an interpretive indicator in understanding Qur’anic verses and narrations. The absence of an independent scholarly discussion of this issue has resulted in fragmentation, lack of coherence, and scattered analyses in this area. The fundamental question addressed is whether, by identifying instances of interpretive function within the Shiʿi scholarly tradition, these cases can be classified according to a principled framework and whether such functions possess epistemic validity. This study adopts an analytical approach based on an inductive survey of the works of Shiʿi jurists. The findings indicate that interpretive functions can be classified into three categories: explanatory functions, restrictive functions, and expansive functions. The study concludes that jurists have consistently applied these interpretive functions within the framework of shared linguistic conventions. Accordingly, based on a correct understanding of the authority of customary textual appearances (ḥujjiyyat al‑ẓuhūr al‑ʿurfī)-whose validity depends on reliance upon common linguistic conventions-these interpretive functions are demonstrated to be valid, reliable, and authoritative.
