Rethinking Technology-Mediated Moral Education: A Transition from an Anthropocentric Approach to Techno-Ethical Literacy

Abstract:   (227 Views)
Current approaches to moral education are predominantly human-centric, viewing technology as a neutral tool. However, according to the “Mediation Theory of Ethics,” technology plays an active role in shaping human perceptions, decisions, and moral actions. Consequently, the core problem addressed in this research is the lack of a theoretical framework and effective pedagogical strategies within the moral education system that recognize the mediating and influential role of technology and prepare individuals for responsible moral living in today’s technology-driven world. This study employs a philosophical approach with a descriptive-analytical method. In the descriptive section, key concepts of technology-based ethics are explained based on existing literature. In the analytical section, through philosophical reasoning, a conceptual framework for technology-aware moral education and a corresponding set of pedagogical strategies are presented. The findings indicate that the proposed framework is built on three fundamental pillars: the hermeneutics of moral mediation, the analysis of distributed moral agency, and the enhancement of a futures-oriented perspective on technology ethics. Based on this framework, three pedagogical strategies have been designed. In the first strategy, students “dissect” technical artifacts; in the second, they experience moral complexities by playing diverse roles and facing technological failures; and in the third, they engage in responsible moral thinking by designing hypothetical technologies and formulating ethical impact statements. Finally, it is concluded that moral education must transcend the abstract teaching of principles and transition toward cultivating practical competence for moral living mediated by technology.
